In this prospective study, hearing function of 25 patients hose ages were between 3 months and 8 years that have been treated and followed up with the diagnosis of bacterial meningitis were evaluated by auditory brainstem responses (ABR). ABR is an objective test that does not require cooperation and that provides early diagnosis. Hearing losses have been determined in 32 % of the patients and these patients were followed up. The relationship between hearing loss and the patient\'s age, the length of symptomatic period before diagnosis, initially low CSF glucose, seizures during clinical progression, length of duration of hospitalization and higher morbidity scores was statistically significant.

Bu prospektif çalışmada bakteriyel menenjit tanısı konarak tedavi ve takip edilen, yaşları 3 ay ile 8 yaş arasında değişen 25 hastanın işitme fonksiyonları, kooperasyon gerektirmeyen ve erken tanı olanağı sağlayan objektif bir test oluşa nedeniyle, işitsel beyin sapı cevapları (ABR) ile değerlendirildi Hastaların %32\'sinde işitme kaybı saptanarak bu hastalar takibe alındı. İşitme kaybı ile hastanın yaşı, tanı öncesi semptomatik sürenin uzunluğu, başlangıç BOS glukoz değerinin düşüklüğü, klinik seyir sırasında nöbet geçirme, hastanede kalış süresinin uzunluğu ve morbidite skorunun yüksek oluşu arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı ilişki bulundu.
