ABSTRACT
Objective: Chronic renal failure is one of the most common diseases in the community that affects olfactory function. The aims of this study were to evaluate the olfactory function of the patients with chronic renal failure, to investigate the effect of dialysis on olfactory function and to reveal biochemical parameters which are related with olfactory dysfunction. Material and Methods: 107 patients with end-stage renal disease and 17 healty subjects were included in the study. Among study group 87 patients were receiving hemodialysis treatment, 20 patients were receiving peritoneal dialysis treatment. Body mass index, biochemical parameters and weight values of the participants were recorded before and after dialysis session. Patients in study group were tested by using olfaction test before and after dialysis session and the control group underwent two tests at four-hour intervals. For statistical analysis, dependent and independent sample t-test, Pearson correlation analysis, one way variance analysis and LSD tests were used. Results: Pre-dialysis olfaction scores of the patients with renal failure were significantly lower than the control group. It was found that one session of dialysis treatment resulted in 11.2% improvement in olfaction scores in patients receiving hemodialysis treatment and 5.5% in patients receiving peritoneal dialysis treatment. It was found that improvement in olfactory functions and increase in Kt/V value were correlated in patients receiving hemodialysis treatment. Conclusion: Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis have a curative effect on olfactory functions. Improvement in olfactory functions and increase in Kt/V value was correlated in patients receiving hemodialysis treatment.
