ABSTRACT
Objective: We evaluated the patients who were admitted with submandibular gland mass and had surgery in our clinic. We investigated types of surgical operations, histopathologic results and rates of complications in this study. Material and Methods: Forty patients who were admitted to E.N.T. clinic and had submandibular gland excision surgery were included in our study. Age, gender, symptoms, diagnostic methods, types of operations, histopathological diagnosis and postoperative follow-up results of the patients were examined. Histopathological diagnoses were as follows: Five patients (12.8%) had malignant and 35 patients (77.2%) had benign pathologies. Three patients had a supraomohyoid neck dissection and two patients had a functional neck dissection in addition to gland excision. We found the most common malignant tumor as adenocystic carcinoma (7.5%), the most common benign pathology as sialolitiazis (67.5%).The most commonly encountered complication was marginal mandibular nerve injury (10%). Results: We investigated the patients who had submandibular gland excision and reviewed the literature.
