ABSTRACT
Superior semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome is a recently defined peripheral audiovestibular pathology. This syndrome is caused by weakening or complete absence of the bone structure overlying the superior semicircular canal. Symptoms of this syndrome may be vestibular and/or audiological. As a result of the dehiscence of the superior semicircular canal, a third window effect is thought to play a role and causes increased sensitivity to sound and pressure. Most common clinical presentations are sound or pressure induce vertigo (Tullio’s phenomenon, Hennebert sign), and torsional nystagmus. Audiological evaluation and thin-sliced computed tomography are the tools for diagnosis. Treatment is nessesary in symptomatic patients. Preferred treatment strategy is capping, which refers to closure of the opening in the superior canal.
