MRI has been used for the diagnosis of the TMJ pathologies since 1980, MRI stands as a tool for the diagnosis, postoperative evaluation of TMJ disorders as well as its major role in determining the TMJ disc. For these reasons, MRI has found an indispensable use for its routine application in patients presenting with TMJ symptoms. Physicians using MRI should have a good command of MRI knowledge, as well as TMJ anatomy and physiology. MRI will then become a major and first diagnostic method to evaluate TMJ pathologies. We discussed the advantages and disadvantages of the MRI on the TMJ images of the normal subjects and patients who presented to our clinic with TMJ dysfunction.

Temporomandibular eklem (TME) patolojilerinin tanısında MRG (manyetik rezonans görüntüleme) 1980 yılından beri kullanılmaktadır. MRG temporomandibuler eklem hastalıklarım tanısı ve ameliyat sonrası değerlendirilmesinde vazgeçilmez bir tanı yöntemidir. Manyetik rezonans görüntülemeden yararlanan hekim görüntüleme yöntemi ile ilgili temel bilgilere ilaveten eklem anatomi ve fizyolojisi hakkında bilgi sahibi olmalıdır. Bu çalışmada TME anatomisi, fizyolojisi ve temel MRG fiziği ile ilgili temel bilgiler verildikten sonra, normal veya TME disfonksiyonu tanısı alan hastalarda MRG sonuçlarına örnekler verilerek bu yöntemin avantaj ve dezavantajları ile birlikte tartışılmıştır.
