ABSTRACT
Objective: In this study, the necessity of routine histopathologic examination of tonsillectomy specimens was discussed in the context of literature. Material and Methods: In our study, the data of 1.152 patients who underwent tonsillectomy and/or adenotonsillectomy at Fırat University Department of Otorhinolaryngology between July 2008-January 2017 were reviewed for age, sex and histopathologic results. Results: Only 18 of 1.152 patients underwent tonsillectomy and/or adenotonsillectomy with the possibility of malignancy. Unexpected malignancy was not encountered in the remaining 1.134 patients. Conclusion: Because the rate of unexpected malignancy is very low in tonsillectomy specimens, it is necessary to perform preoperative examination more carefully than histopathologic examination routinely. We think that the histopathological examination of specimens is more accurate in patients with at least one of the symptoms of tonsil asymmetry, hardness, ulceration of the tonsil mucosa or palpable lymph node in the physical examination.
