ABSTRACT
Objective: This study aims to investigate the aging-related change of the oculomotor tests (saccad, smooth pursuit and optokinetic), which have an important place in the evaluation of the central vestibular system, and to compare these tests by age groups. Material and Methods: Saccade test, smooth pursuit test and optokinetic test results of 90 (30 young individuals aged 18-45 as individuals group 1, 30 adult individuals aged 46-65 as group 2 and 30 elderly individuals aged 66 and older as group 3) who applied to the otorhinolaryngology outpatient clinic between September 2017-December 2018 were evaluated retrospectively. The results of the saccade test, smooth pursuit test and optokinetic test applied to these individuals were compared according to the groups. Results: Elderly individuals had worse saccade and smooth pursuit functions than young and adult individuals (p<0.05). Saccade test accuracy value, smooth pursuit test gain and asymmetry values were observed to decrease after 65 years (p<0.05). Optokinetic test gain value was observed to decrease after age 45 (p<0.05). The 1. group had the best latency value and latency value was significantly longer with aging (p<0.05). Conclusion: Ages of individuals are an important factor for oculomotor tests. While young individuals have the best oculomotor test scores, the scores of the tests worsen with aging.
