Twenty two-year old male patient presented with complaints of dysphagia and dysphonia. Physical examination revealed a mass of 4 cm in diameter at the tongue base. On the computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging of the neck, the thyroid gland was not seen on the normal localization and the mass which was located at the tongue base was compatible with ectopic lingual tissue. These findings were confirmed by thyroid scintigraphy. In fiberoptic evaluation of swallowing, pooling of the bolus was noted due to the mass and the patient clears it after three or four swallowing efforts. Modified barium swallow study in lateral position, revealed that the epiglottis did not cover the laryngeal vestibule, the bolus transmits to the esophagus from postcricoid area, and pharynx cleared after a few concurrent swallowing efforts. On the postoperative 10th day, swallowing studies with all types of food showed normal function.

Yirmi iki yasında erkek hasta disfaji ve disfoni sikayetleri ile basvurdu. Fizik muayenede dil kökünde 4 cm çapında kitle saptandı. Boyun tomografisi ve magnetik rezonans görüntülemede tiroid bezinin normal lokalizasyonda bulunmadığı, dil kökündeki kitlenin tiroid dokusu ile uyumlu olduğu saptandı. Bu bulgular tiroid sintigrafisi ile desteklendi. Fiberoptik endoskopik yutma çalısmasında katı gıda alımı sonrası kitle yüzeyinde gıda birikimi olduğu ve hastanın bunu 3-4 yutkunmada temizlediği saptandı. Modifiye baryumlu yutma çalısmasında lateral pozisyonda epiglotun larengeal vestibulü kapatamadığı, gıdanın postkrikoid bölgeden özefagusa ilerlediği ve katı gıdalarda ardısık yutma hareketi ile farenksin temizlendiği gözlendi. Postoperatif 10.uncu günde yapılan yutma çalısmalarında tüm gıdalarda yutma normal olarak değerlendirildi.
