The primary treatment in chronic otitis media is surgery. Type of surgery differs according to the extent of pathology and the factors related to the patient. The open technique procedures that are especially preferred in cholesteatoma surgery had left no expectations of hearing in the past, however today, the ossiculoplasty techniques make the patients’ life qualities better by improving their hearing results. In this study, we present the hearing results of the patients who had open technique tympanoplasty. Material and Methods: Between January 2004-March 2006, 50 of 73 patients who had undergone open technique tympanoplasty due to chronic otitis media were included in this study. The hearing results were evaluated in these patients. Results: Approximately 10 dB improvement was determined in postoperative median air-bone gap. 15 of 50 (30%) patients had no change in postopeative air conduction therosholds, 21 patients (42%) had improvement and 14 patients (28%) had various degrees of decrease. In all patients a dry, stable and safe middle ear was obtained and the without any disease. Conclusion: Open technique tympanoplasy which is preferred especially in cholesteatoma surgery is a procedure that provides total removal of pathology and gives the patient a hope for hearing after surgery.

Kronik otitis media’nın primer tedavisi cerrahidir. Patolojinin yayılımı ve hastayla ilgili faktörlere bağlı olarak seçilecek cerrahi yöntemler de değişmektedir. Özellikle kolesteatom cerrahisinde tercih edilen açık teknik yaklaşımlar, geçmişte hastalarda işitmeyle ilgili hiçbir umut bırakmamaktayken, günümüzde geliştirilen ossikuloplasti teknikleri sonucunda hastaların işitmesine katkıda bulunarak yaşam kalitelerini artırmaktadır. Bu çalışmada açık teknik timpanoplasti uygulanan olgularda işitme sonuçları araştırılmıştır. Yöntem ve Gereçler: Ocak 2004 - Mart 2006 tarihleri arasında kronik otitis media nedeni ile açık teknik timpanoplasti uygulanan 73 hastadan takipte kalan 50 hasta çalışmaya alındı. Açık teknik timpanoplasti uygulanmış olan hastalarda işitme sonuçlarımı değerlendirildi. Bulgular: Hastalarımızın postoperatif hava-kemik aralığı ortalamasında yaklaşık 10 dB’lik bir iyileşme gözlenmiştir. Postoperatif hava yolu eşiklerine bakıldığında 50 hastanın 15’inde (%30) değişim olmadığı, 21 hastada (%42) iyileşme, 14 hastada (%28) çeşitli düzeylerde kötüleşme olduğu saptandı. Hastaların hepsinde takip süreleri içerisinde kuru, sabit ve güvenilir bir kulak sağlanıp, hastalık temizlendi. Sonuç: Başta kolesteatom cerrahisi olmak üzere çeşitli endikasyonlarda tercih edilen açık teknik timpanoplasti hem patolojinin rahat temizlenebildiği, hem de hastada işitme olanağı sağlayan bir yaklaşım olarak görülmektedir.
