ABSTRACT
Vomeronasal organ (VNO) is an intranasal chemosensory structure that exists in addition to the olfactory system. It is located in the anterior third of nasal septum, 1-2 cm dorsal to the columella and 0,5-1 cm above nasal floor. It is thought to be functional in animals. Its presence has been shown in adult human beings. But there exists to be few and contradictory information in the literature concerning its function in men. Current ideas related to the anatomy, histological properties and function of VNO are presented via a brief review of the literature.

ÖZET
Vomeronazal organ (VNO), pek çok memelide olfaktuar sistem ile birlikte bulunan, intranazal kemoduyusal bir yapıdır. Yerlesimi itibarı ile septum ön 1/3 kısmında, kolumellanın 1-2 cm dorsalinde ve nazal tabanın 0,5-1 cm üzerinde yer almaktadır. Hayvan türlerindeki fonksiyonu üzerinde az çok mutabakat vardır. Anatomik olarak varlığı yetiskin insanlarda da gösterilmistir. Bununla birlikte VNO’nun insanda islevi konusunda az sayıda ve çoğu zaman birbiriyle çelisen veriler mevcuttur. Bu yapının anatomisi, histolojik özellikleri ve islevi üzerindeki görüsler güncel yayınlardan yararlanılarak sunulmustur.
