ABSTRACT
Objective: To compare the morphologic relationships of the nasal septal body in terms of the body mass index and septal deviation angle. Material and Methods: 126 patients who were examined with computed tomography due to nasal obstruction, headache, snoring or smell disorder and whose body mass index was determined included in the study. In computed tomography scans, septal body fields and widths were compared according to body mass index and septal deviation angle. Results: In this study, a total of 126 (63 female and 63 male) patients with a mean age of 38.89±12.61 were included. It was found that means of width of the nasal septal body was 8.04±1.95 mm, and means of field of the nasal septal body was 88.21±29.79 mm2. There was no correlation between body mass index and total septal body width and field. On the contralateral side of the septal deviation, nasal septal body field and width were larger than the ipsilateral side (p=0.01). There was a positive correlation between the septal deviation angle and the width differences of the septal bodies on both sides of the septum (p=0,01). Conclusion: The diameter of nasal septal body is larger on the opposite side of the deviation. Septal body and inferior turbinate are functionally similar and these two systems work together in the nasal cavity to regulate nasal resistance.
