ABSTRACT
Objective: To investigate the effectiveness of selenium, an antioxidant, in the treatment of idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL). Material and Methods: Patients between the ages of 18-65 who met the inclusion criteria and were treated with systemic steroid or systemic steroid with selenium due to ISSNHL were included in the study. The patients were divided into two groups according to the treatment. Patients using systemic steroid therapy were included in Group 1, and selenium added to systemic steroid therapy were included in Group 2. The two groups were compared using hearing gain, recovery rate and Furuhashi criteria to evaluate treatment efficiency. Results: Group 1 consisted of 40 patients and Group 2 consisted of 32 patients. The two groups were homogeneous according to audiological and demographic data and prognostic factors. When the two groups were compared in terms of the benefit they received from the treatment by using hearing gains, recovery rate and Furuhashi criteria, no statistically significant difference was found between the two groups in all three parameters. (p=0.355, p=0.154, p=0.754 respectively). Conclusion: Selenium added to steroid did not reveal a statistically significant difference in terms of improvement in ISSNHL treatment. Therefore, we think that selenium, which is thought to be theoretically beneficial in ISSNHL because it is an antioxidant, but lacks sufficient evidence about its role in treatment, is not necessary in the treatment of ISSNHL in order to avoid possible drug side effects and polypharmacy.
