ABSTRACT
Objective: Among young students, listening to high-intensity
music with personal listening devices is becoming widespread,
and exposure to high-intensity sounds can cause temporary or permanent
hearing loss. The aim of the study was to evaluate high-frequency
thresholds with respect to recreational noise exposure of university students
and to determine the auditory impact level assessed by participants
themselves. Material and Methods: In this study, 94 university
students aged between 18-25 were included. The students were asked
to answer the questions prepared by the researchers as to recreation
noise exposure and auditory engagament level. Students were divided
into 3 groups according to their exposure to recreational noise. Immitansmetric
evaluation was performed for all students. Pure tone assessment
of air and bone conduction hearing thresholds in the range of
125-8,000 Hz and high frequency hearing thresholds in the range of
9,000-18,000 Hz were measured. Results: There was a significant difference
between the groups in terms of auditory impact score. The
group with exposure to recreational noise for more than 1 hour a day
was found to be the highest auditory impact. There was a significant difference
between the students who were exposed more than 1 hour a day
and the students who were not exposed in terms of auditory impact
score (p<0.05). There was no significant difference between the groups
in terms of high-frequency hearing thresholds (p>0.05). Conclusion: It
was found that exposure to recreational noise in university students did
not affect high-frequency hearing thresholds, but the individual's selfassessed
auditory impact level.
